John Peel: Some
thoughts, memories and dedications from "The Rezillos"
"The only time news like that has had a similar resonance with me was when John Lennon was shot - it really was that powerful. Unlike his contemporaries on the radio you always felt he was talking to you, not at you. And his infectious love of music meant his support convinced you there was light at the end of the tunnel." EUGENE REYNOLDS "John Peel -I was very shocked to get the news - & I feel a big sense of loss. I had a lot of respect for him - and not only that I was an avid listener of 'Home Truths' In all honesty it was the best thing by far on TV or Radio. I think through that programme I got to know John as a person -he let whatever John was come right through & he had such an intimate way of communicating. A very good heart. All those mentions of Gilgemesh -I think he was thinking of higher things - And as for my music (you know -the punk) - he got us out there I think he played ' Cant Stand My Baby' constantly-& everything happened from there -records -New York, fun and extraordinary times.........I cant bear to think of the void of Saturday mornings now -no one else compares and no one else will do. 65 -he wis just a bairn. My love and regards go out to his family."

"I never had the fortune to meet John Peel in person, but the news of his untimely passing was still akin to losing a friend. As a teenager I discovered his Saturday afternoon show in the early days of Radio 1, and never having seen a photograph of him, I imagined that with his laid back Liverpool accent he looked like George Harrison of The Beatles. At an impressionable time in life, I tuned in religously every week, John became a trusted cultural mentor and the finest teacher of musical appreciation a person could have, introducing me to the likes of T-Rex, Captain Beefheart, David Bowie and the unforgettable wierdness of Wild Man Fischer, plus a host of other artistes. His honesty and integrity always shining through, he had a huge impression on my life and that of my peers. My sympathies go out to his family and friends, and if John is not forthwith inducted into the rock and Roll Hall of Fame, then that institution is truly meaningless by default. Will we ever see his like again." JO CALLIS |
